Geography
Geography teaches an understanding of places and environments so that children have a contextual knowledge of geographically significant places, both on land and in the oceans. Through their work in geography, children learn about their local area and compare their life in this area with that in other regions of the UK and the rest of the world.
Children should develop an understanding of the processes that give rise to physical and human changes over time and how these are interdependent. They learn how to draw and interpret maps, locate countries and places and develop skills of research and investigation. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children gain an insight of life in other cultures. Children will learn how to present their work in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.
Below is a copy of our geography curriculum overview which sets out the key learning that our children will cover as they progress from Nursery to Year 6. Across each year group we have developed fieldwork opportunities to ensure that our children understand what geography is and what it means to be a geographer through the development of their:
- Locational Knowledge
- Place Knowledge
- Human & Physical Geography
